Animal Pests

Richardson Ground Squirrels
For severe infestations of Richardson Ground Squirrels, 2% Liquid Strychnine Concentrate should be used. The concentrate is often sold to agricultural producers in the spring. The County of Stettler Agricultural Service Board sells these products during certain hours or by appointment only.

Contact Ag Services for more information at 403-742-4441.

Coyote Control
It is difficult to completely eliminate coyotes and the damage they cause to livestock. Through careful observation of livestock, maintaining fences and the use of a good guard animal, you can effectively reduce the negative impacts of the coyote population.

When these management techniques are not enough the Agricultural Service Board will investigate incidents of predator kill or harassment and implement control as necessary.

The board has available:
  • 1080 Tablets (Sodium Monofluoroacetate)
  • M44 Sodium Cyanide Guns
    • Guns will only be installed by certified board employees
Beaver Control
In cases when a beaver dam is causing flooding that is negatively affecting agricultural land or county right of ways the Agricultural Service Board will remove the dam free of charge. Please notify the county if you come across a culvert that is plugged by beavers.

Norway Rat Control
Every year the Agricultural Service Board receives two to five reports of rat sittings. Every report is investigated and to date there have been no positive sittings of Norway Rats within the county borders.

We appreciate the public concern with these destructive pests and encourage any pest sightings to be reported. We have available, magpie traps and skunk traps for ratepayers to use.
